Best way to rent a car in Peru

jerry
Hey everyone, heading to Peru soon and want to drive around instead of being stuck on tour buses the whole time. Never hired a car there before so a bit clueless about the whole thing. Do I need any special permits, and is it better to book ahead online or just grab something when I land in Lima?

Smart move, public transport is fine between the big cities but once you want to hit the highlands or the coast at your own pace having your own wheels is a total game changer. Bring your passport, a valid driving licence from your home country, and an IDP is worth having even though a lot of rental desks won't strictly ask for it. Book online before you fly so you can lock in a better rate and avoid the inflated airport walk-up prices. To check options and rent a car in Peru just browse the listings on this site https://getrentacar.com/en-US/peru .

Grab something with decent ground clearance even if you don't think you need it, the speed bumps in towns are massive and some mountain roads have rough patches that a low sedan will scrape badly. Better to have the extra height and not need it than hear that awful crunch under the front bumper.
